Ottawa Locks, Rideau Canal, Canada

Built over 1826-1832 by the British, the 200 km waterway connects Ottawa on the Ottawa River to Kingston on Lake Ontario. Originally used by commercial vessels until the rapids of the more direct St. Lawrence River had been tamed by a series of locks, it is now a National Historic Site as well as, since 2007, an UNESCO World Heritage Site. The locks on the system open for (mostly pleasure) navigation in mid-May and close in mid-October.

The old postcard also shows trolleys of the Ottawa Electric Railway which were replaced by buses in the late 1950s.
