19th century sailing ship 'Leonidas'

 
Named after a figure in Greek mythology, this ship, as well as cargo, carried indentured labourers; one voyage was from India to the West Indies in 1878. The following year on 3 March 1879 the Leonidas departed from Calcutta and arrived at Levuka in Fiji on 14 May. The labourers who disembarked were the first of over 61,000 to arrive from India over the following 37 years, forming the nucleus of the Fiji Indian community that is now about 40% percent of Fiji's population (see earlier post).
