The Cook Strait ferry
Aramoana looks tiny near the US aircraft carrier
America at anchor in Wellington Harbour in 1968. Too large to berth, liberty vessels had to be used to get visitors and crew to and from the
America. At 1,048 ft (319 metres) long overall and with a beam of 248 ft (76 metres), she was one largest vessels to visit the port. This ship was launched in February 1964 and decommissioned in 1996. This was one of the photos considered for but not used in the book
New Zealand Maritime Images: the Golden Years.

Fasinating photo, not only of the visiting carrier but at least four shipping companies in the foreground. Priceless .
Was on the USS America during that time. Worked on the flight deck catapult crew. Living in Christchurch now. Remember how beautiful the weather was the 3 days we were there. If anybody wants to communicate with me about that visit my e-mail is back@paradise.net.nz
