Wellington commuter train on the hill above Pukerua Bay

A drone view of a multiple-unit Matangi type heading from Waikanae to the city.  Over 130 years since it was built, this single track section remains a traffic bottleneck.

Does the terrain make it too difficult to double the track?

It could be done, and if it was Switzerland it would be, but the cost is big.
