a tram crash in Wellington, 10 June 1922
A scene at the intersection of Molesworth Street and Tinakori Road in Wellington after the tram pictured had runaway with no-one aboard from "the loop at the Gardens" (one assumes outside the north entrance to the Botanical Gardens, see earlier posts) to allow a tram from Karori to pass between 8:30 and 9 am. As described in the Evening Post article of that day, the motorman and conductor got off and thought the brakes would keep it there -- but didn't. After about a mile (1.6 km) the tram derailed at the above intersection and was stopped by soft earth in a vacant lot, limiting the damage.
A photo that was considered for, but not used in the book Wellington Transport Memories.
