Colchester trams, England, 1900s

The Colchester Tramway, a five route system in 3'6" (1067 mm) gauge, opened in 1904 with a fleet of 16 trams supplied by Dick Kerr & Company, which had booms made by the British Electric Wagon & Carriage Co. at Preston, mounted on Brill 21E trucks. Colchester trams were replaced by buses from 1928, the process complete by December 1929.

In the top picture, a painting by transport artist Malcolm Root, and sold as a greeting card, tram no.10 is seen ascending Lexden Hill in the afternoon, on its way to the tram terminus, a depot in Magdalen Street in the centre of town.
