the Oléron Viaduct, France

A postcard probably issued at the time this 3 km viaduct linking the island of Oléron on the Atlantic in Charente -Maritime to the mainland was opened in June 1966. With 46 spans giving a length between abutments of 2,862 metres, it was the longest bridge in France until 1974 when this status was taken by the Pont de Saint-Nazaire. Since 1988 the title has gone to the bridge to the island of Ré.

Apart from cars, 2 cycle lanes and 2 sidewalks, the Oléron viaduct also carries in its apron drinking water through a 60 cm diameter pipe, electricity and telephone lines. It is a cantilever girder bridge 10.6 metres wide, reaching a maximum height of 23.2 metres.
