cars outside "The Sign of the Kiwi" Christchurch, 1920s



This now heritage listed building on the rim of the Port Hills separating Christchurch from Lyttelton was built over 1916-1917 by Harry Ell as a staging post and opened as a tearoom and rest house.  The controversial toll gate was removed after Ell's death in June 1934.  It is still a popular tearooms.
