steam railway photography at night

We came upon this German book Nacht Zuge: Dampf-Träume am Brocken (Night Trains: steam dreams on the Brocken) recently and it is impressive enough to be worth mentioning here.  It consists of color photos of steam trains on the metre gauge (mostly) steam operated railways in the Harz mountains in central Germany, particularly the line which goes to the Brocken summit.  These lines have charming scenery during the day, but obtaining spectacular photos at night is something that few have attempted.  The two pioneers of night photography that most people are aware of in the US are O. Winston Link and Richard Steinheimer.

In a generous page format the book presents the best photos of photographer Olaf Haensch taken over a 5 year period at night in the mountains with expensive flash installations; resulting in surreal atmospheric scenes of steam trains and and their surroundings. A map produced from satellite data and gradient profiles of the lines round out the book.  There is also an interesting text for those who can read German.  Webpage.
