A commuter train (to/from where unspecified) seen in Chicago in September 1977, headed by an EMD GP40 built 10 years previously.

Inbound "Orland Park Local" commuter train crossing the 21st Street vertical-lift bridge on its final approach to Chicago Union Station (CUS).

Formerly this had been a Wabash Railroad commuter service run serving Dearborn Station, until the Wabash Railroad was merged with the Norfolk and Western RR in 1964. The train continued to use Dearborn Station until 1976, when the train was relocated to CUS. Dearborn Station then was closed to trains permanently. When the "Orland Park Local" began using this bridge in 1976, an interchange track at "Alton Junction" just south of the lift bridge (in the distance of the view) permitted the train to be interchanged between its N&W (Wabash) route and CUS.

The Chicago Regional Transportation Authority, now referred to as "METRA", continues to operate this train with modernized equipment, under the current rail service branch known as Southwest Service (SWS). As of this writing, plans are underway to relocate SWS service from CUS to nearby LaSalle Street Station, as one of several ongoing measures to address rail-congestion issues at CUS and within the Chicago area as a whole.
