the 'Megantic' - actually not that big
The name was used in 1908 as one of the White Star Line's ocean liner series with names indicating 'very big', including the Titanic. This one was, however, a comparatively small 11,140 grt Reefer (refrigerated cargo ship) built in 1962 by Swan Hunter in the Wallsend West Yard of North Tyneside, England.
She was the first Shaw Savill cargo vessel to receive the pale grey hull, and the first to be registered in London rather than Southampton. She was sold to Greek owners as the Demetrios Ventouris in 1979, but was scrapped the same year. Above is an official postcard from 1965 and a mid-1970s pic taken in Sydney
