the Soviet version of King Kong

With a strong visual similarity to the giant ape on top of the Empire State building in the 1933 movie King Kong surrounded with aircraft, here is an artist's idea of a skyscraper for Moscow near the Kremlin - on the site of the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour demolished by the Communists - this time with Lenin on the top. It would have become the world's tallest structure. Construction started in 1937 but was terminated by the German invasion in 1941 - its steel frame was disassembled for use in fortifications and bridges. Construction was never resumed. In 1958 the foundations of the Palace were converted into what would become the world's largest open-air swimming pool.

The Cathedral was rebuilt over 1995-2000.
