bus driver and 'clippie', England, 1979

It used to be a common sight in every town and city in the UK: a bus driver and his clippie having a 5 minute break, a smoke and chat while the bus rested and new passengers boarded at its terminus or main stop.

This shows a 1961 Leyland Titan PD2A/27 at the town centre at Barrow in Furness in October 1979. Across the road sits the inevitable replacements to one man operation: a 1966 and a 1968 Leyland Leopard single decker. The clippies were retired in 1981 when these double deckers were withdrawn.  (Wallace Trickett)
