streamlined J at Dunedin, 1940s

The 40 members of the 4-8-2 J class designed in the late 1930s and built by North British Locomotive Works of Scotland, featured a bullet nose inspired by designs in America, particularly the New York Central's 'Hudsons'.  Like them, however, the streamlining was removed from the J class after the war as it was found to be a nuisance for maintenance and a soot trap.
