This was a long route and was competition for the regular rail service to Onehunga. However, it only lasted about half the time that the trains did, a bit over 50 years compared to nearly a century (the trains are back again, see earlier post). The wharves lost most of their passenger traffic once the NIMT was complete, but maintained their role for freight. For more, see earlier posts and our books
