travel by train in Finland, late 1960s

Showing a Dm9 class diesel multiple unit. According to the 4rail.net site, "The Dm8 and Dm9 were four decades ago the trusted long distance fleet for non-electrified stretches of track. The unique shape and coloring of the Dm8 and Dm9 makes sure that even the people not so much interested in trains remember these. The last major line where the "Carrots" were used was from Helsinki to Turku. Once the lines were electrified, the units became redundant and were sentenced either to torch or secondary use. This secondary use often was serving as a platform for overhead wire installations and repairs and many coaches are still in this use despite the technology development."
