railway fun in Nepal

Despite having a population of 27 million, there's not much infrastructure in Nepal and the only railways are lines which connect from depots to India. The Janakpur Railway is a 2'6" (762 mm) gauge line, 50 km or 30 miles long (of which 3 km is in India) across flat terrain, connecting Jaynagar in India with the pilgrim centre in Janakpur, 30 km from Jaynagar - from there to Bijalpura, 20 km, is freight only. There is no parallel road so the railway is the only way to get there from Jaynagar. There are many different styles of passenger coaches, including a two axle wooden first class coach and for the lower classes, flat and box cars as well as the locomotive itself. The above photo is of uncertain age; other photos show diesels.
