traffic bobby at Figueroa and Adams, L.A., 1924

In London policemen have been known as 'bobbies' after Robert Peel who created the police force on 19 June 1829.  It's not a term you hear anywhere else, but this early traffic control device installed at this L.A. intersection was called an American Bobby.  How it worked we know not.
