This was built in in Saint-Nazaire for the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique's France-USA services. In April 1912 while on a transatlantic voyage La Touraine was one of a number of ships that related wireless radio warnings about icebergs to the Titanic shortly before that ship's collision with an iceberg. In May 1913, she began sailing from Le Havre to Montréal carrying only second- and third-class passengers.
