Crema da Tavola Rossa, Italy, 1920s


What was being sold with this poster wasn't travel, as it may seem, but fascism. There is a commercial product being sold - Red Table Cream - but that isn't the real sales pitch. The table cream is mentioned in such an incidental manner that it could be table polish or table sherry. "Raise the sails, youth of Italy in the wake of De Pineda [referring to the legendary Italian galleon shown on the poster]." The "wake" is a double entendre - of the boat and the awakening of enlightenment. The poster was sponsored by the Lega Aerea Nazionale (National Air League), accounting for the the seaplane.
