and 1,000 miles up the Amazon, Brazil

Booth Line was a shipping company based in Liverpool, England that existed from 1863 to 1986. The Amazon cruises had begun as early as 1866. If 1,000 miles sounds an exaggeration, apparently the main river is navigable for large ocean steamers to Manaus, 1,500 km (932 miles) upriver from the mouth. Smaller ocean vessels of 3,000 tons or 9,000 tons and 5.5 metres (18 ft) draft can reach as far as Iquitos, Peru, 3,600 km (2,237 miles) from the sea.
