bascule bridge, Stettin, Germany

Having mentioned one in Auckland, here is a scene of such a bridge over the Oder River in Stettin, Germany, circa 1900, which has been raised to let a paddle steamer through.  This was known as the Bahnhofsbrücke as it was at a right angle to the railway station between what was then Uferstrasse and Wasserstrasse.  It didn't survive WW2 and was not rebuilt.  See the earlier posts on Stettin.
