train time at Opawa, circa 1920

With a tank loco-hauled passenger train from Lyttelton in sight.   The Heathcote River bridge visible and the trees made for a pleasant setting.

Although a fairly flat line, the 10 km or 6 miles from Christchurch to Lyttelton was electrified at the end of the 1920s because of the smoke nuisance in the Lyttelton tunnel.  This lasted until 1970.  See our books for more.
