Star Ferry, Hong Kong
The ferries between the Hong Kong Island and Kowloon on the mainland at Tsim Sha Tsui have been operating since 1888 and are a principal tourist attraction. The faster Mass Transit Railway (opened in 1980 under the harbour) has taken the bulk of the workers commuter traffic. Nevertheless, the fleet of twelve ferries operating the now two routes across the harbour was carrying over 70,000 passengers a day, or 26 million a year until the four routes became two at the end of last month. Figures for the last four weeks are not to hand.
The photo was taken on a hot summer day from a ferry on an opposite Tsim Sha Tsui to Wan Chai crossing.
