iron ore at Newcastle

The port of Newcastle in Australia, like its namesake in England, had a lot of coal in the area and for this reason BHP opened its steelworks in the town in 1915 to make use of it. At its peak the plant had some 50,000 employees but economics changed by the 1990s and the plant closed in 1999.  This view shows iron ore for the steelworks to process, on the wharves of the port in an interesting industrial study from the past.

Like the city in England, Newcastle, NSW was a grimy place, but in recent times has been cleaned and rejuvenated.
