the Liverpool Overhead Railway

A railway ahead of its time--an elevated electric railway dating from the 1880s. Not only was it the world's first such railway, it was also the first to be protected by automatic signaling.

Despite its obvious benefits, the line was closed at the end of 1956.  The story is on this website

An early advertising poster - an overhead view of those ships certainly sounds great!
