San Francisco then and now

California Street circa 1950 and approximately the same location now.  Many buildings have been replaced but the cable cars are still there - "hold on tight, please" - and San Francisco also has trolley buses; along with the steep streets (not to mention the earthquake fault line) it's almost enough to make a Wellingtonian feel homesick.

The turntable for cable cars where Powell Street meets Market Street, likewise about 1950; this is a perennially popular place for tourist cameras.

Fisherman's Wharf, circa 1964, with the Golden Gate bridge in the distance.  Today the Fisherman's Grotto is still there but the cargo ships are gone. The nearest wharf building in the centre now houses parking and the Musée Mécanique.  Among other things, the F Market heritage streetcar (tramway) line is now an attraction around these wharves, running along the street in the foreground.
