the old Eastbourne Ferry building

A view of the historic Wellington wharf building of the Eastbourne Ferry service, which operated cross-harbour ferries between here and Eastbourne (actually Day's Bay).  This service lasted from 1913 to 1948, but the building is still there; for a while it had a hairdresser among other tenants, we don't know who occupies it now.  The truck is a D series International of the late 1930s.

The Eastbourne ferry service was recommenced from Queen's Wharf in the 1980s after commuters realised that it is just as quick as the car or bus, and in peak times even quicker.

A photo that was considered for but not used in the book Wellington Transport Memories.
