trams are back in in Auckland

Today the new Auckland waterfront Wynyard Quarter was opened by the Prime Minister. The attractions include a tramway loop over which two trams operate on the 15-minute circuit: a W2 Class Tram and an X-1 Class Tram.

The 17 tonne, 48 feet long (14.6 metre) W2 tram has a seating capacity of 52 and requires a driver and a conductor. The 9 tonne, 31 feet (9.4 metre) long X-1 tram has a seating capacity of 32 and only requires a driver. Both arrived from Australia in May painted in carnation red - the original 1950s Auckland tramway base colour - after being restored at the Bendigo Tramway Museum in Australia. TVNZ video

In the spirit of the occasion, here are a couple of early 1950s pics by an unknown photographer of Auckland trams as they were until 1956:
K Road or Symonds Street?

between Kingsland and Mt Albert?
