trains at Ngauranga

As those who have our books know, Ngauranga is the second station from Wellington on the Hutt Valley Line.

The first picture is one of the paintings Phil Dickson has done of the area, set in 1875 when the line to the Hutt Valley was the only line.

The second photo by Percy Godber about 25 years later shows a passenger and goods train travelling north passing through the station; a goods (ballast?) train with a D class locomotive is on a siding. One notes the stockyards alongside the railway.

A view from a similar vantage point taken in 1964 will be found in the book Wellington Transport MemoriesSee an earlier post for a view of the service station that used to be at the bottom of the Ngauranga Gorge.

The Train Simulator artwork is one of many impressive such pics on this webpage.
