One of the leading figures in the maquis groups of the French Resistance of WW2 who became one of the Allies' most decorated servicewomen of the war, Wellington-born Nancy Wake died last Sunday evening London time at the age of nearly 99.
She was nicknamed "The White Mouse" during WW2 and the Gestapo put a huge price on her head of 5 million francs. At one point she was actually arrested but then released again. Her exploits have been dramatised for TV and her autobiography from 1983 has been reprinted many times.
