Electric streetcars in Manhattan, 1903

The Flatiron building is, of course, one of the world's best-known. Completed in 1902 as a very early skyscraper, the 22 storey, 285 ft (87 metre) high building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1989.

The first experiment with electric traction for a streetcar line in New York was in 1888 on the line to 86th Street. The line went back to using horses for a time, but switched to an below-grade third rail (commonly called a "conduit") in 1897.

The conversion of most of the NYC streetcars to bus operation took place over 1935-1936. But there is a heritage operation planned, the Brooklyn Heritage Trolley Project
