The pics of the NZR workman's hut in the previous post made us wonder what the average new house size is in NZ, and international comparisons. According to
this report, the average size of a new detached house in NZ is 216 sq metres (2,326 sq. feet).
The table gives the average new dwelling floor area in square metres in different countries. Because of differences in timing and definitions for what constitutes a house, these figures are indicative only.
This CNN report states that in 2013 the average size of new houses in the USA had increased (after declines following the 2008 financial crisis) to 2,600 sq ft or 242 sq metres.
