early Indian Railways electric locomotive

This Bo-Bo type class was built by Kraus-Maffei, Germany, to a French design and entered service in 1959 as class WAM/1 on the ER (Eastern Railway) and NR (Northern Railway). They had an output of 2,840 hp, weighed 74 tonnes, and could run at a maximum speed of 100 km/h. Mercury-arc rectifiers (also known as 'ignitron') were fitted originally, but these were later replaced by silicon diode rectifiers. They were designed for 25 kV ac, and like most Indian Railways, for broad track gauge, 5'6" or 1650 mm.
