the 'African Meteor' in Auckland

A cargo ship of a bygone age seen in Auckland in the 1960s, one of the photos that was considered for but not used in the book New Zealand Maritime Images: the Golden Years.

African Meteor was built by Litton Ingalls Shipbuilding at Pascagoula East, Mississippi, in 1962 for Farrell Lines with a home port of New York. She had a gross tonnage of 11,309 grt and summer DWT of 12,932 tons, a length overall of 174.4 metres and beam of 22.9 metres.  In 1980 the ship was registered to the US government and the name was shortened to Meteor then changed to Cape Alexander. The withdrawal from use date seems to be 1991.
