Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range 2-8-0

Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range No. 332 heads west north of Knife River, Minn., with eight DM&IR ore cars and a caboose in tow on May 12, 2024. Steve Glischinski© Provided by Trains.com

ULUTH, Minn. - It was a scene right out of the early 1950s: a Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range steam locomotive pulling a string of ore cars and a caboose on the line between Two Harbors, Minn., and Duluth. But the date wasn't 1952, but May 12, 2024, as the Lake Superior Railroad Museum's DM&IR 2-8-0 pulled eight ore cars donated to the museum by Canadian National to storage along the museum's North Shore Scenic Railroad.

Southern Pacific 4-10-2 built by Alco in 1926

from Wikipedia:-

Southern Pacific 5021 is an SP-2 class 4-10-2 steam locomotive built in 1926 by ALCO at their Schenectady, New York, shops. It is the only member of this class of SP locomotives to be preserved, and it is one of only five three-cylinder locomotives preserved in North America.

The locomotive was built in 1926 by the American Locomotive Company, it was designed to haul mixed freight and passenger trains over the Sierra Nevada range between northern California and Nevada. Later in its career, No. 5021 was shifted to service in Oregon, where it remained until its retirement in 1955.

Southern Pacific donated No. 5021 to the Railway and Locomotive Historical Society on March 8, 1956. In 1961, it was fired up and used for operation on the museum's spur line. However, the Southern Pacific did not like this, so they were forced to pull the tracks in 1963. Following this, No. 5021 was stored in the roundhouse of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. While it was stored, a possible excursion career for the No. 5021 was being arranged by the Santa Fe, but the plans were dropped.

5021 sat in Southern Pacific's San Bernardino yard until 1975, when it was moved to the Southern Pacific Taylor Yard in Glendale, CA. Shortly after, it was moved back to the RailGiants Train Museum, when Southern Pacific 4449 was on display with the American Freedom Train in the Los Angeles County Fairgrounds. As of 2023, No. 5021 is on permanent display at the Fairplex railway exhibit in Pomona, California.

It's unlikely there was any prototype basis for this, although wagons (boxcars) probably ran in Europe with the Atlanta, Georgia based company's famous logo and colors.

IcelandAir 757 in Northern Lights theme

Icelandair launched its Northern Lights-themed livery in 2015 as part of a campaign to encourage travelers to take a stopover in Iceland. Unsurprisingly, the design has proved popular. Now part of the fleet, the Hekla Aurora Boeing 757 wears the blue and green swirls of the aurora borealis across its body, while a LED mood lighting system on board recreates the effect in the main cabin. Nickel Plate Road 2-8-4. number 759 from 1944

from Wikipedia

Nickel Plate Road 759 is a class "S-2" 2-8-4 "Berkshire" type steam locomotive built in 1944 by the Lima Locomotive Works in Lima, Ohio as a member of the S-2 class for the New York, Chicago & St. Louis Railroad, commonly referred to as the "Nickel Plate Road". Built as a fast freight locomotive, No. 759 served the Nickel Plate until being retired in 1959 and placed into storage. In 1965, No. 759 was purchased by F. Nelson Blount for display in his Steamtown, U.S.A. collection in North Walpole, New Hampshire. The locomotive was restored to operating condition in 1967 by New York commodity broker Ross Rowland for use in hauling his Golden Spike Centennial Limited, a special commemorative train that celebrated the 100th anniversary of the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad in 1969. Afterwards, No. 759 pulled numerous excursions for Ross Rowland and Steamtown until being retired once more and placed back on display in 1977. As of 2023, the locomotive remains on static display at the Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and sibling engine No. 765 continues to operate in mainline excursion service.

Nashville, Chattanooga, & St. Louis 4-8-4

Built in August 1942 by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) of Schenectady, New York, for the Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis Railway (NC&StL) as a member of the J3 class, the Nashville Steam Preservation society is restoring steam locomotive No. 576 to full operation to once again ride the rails of Middle Tennessee.

"No. 576 operated from Nashville to Atlanta, Georgia for nearly a decade. After retirement, the engine was donated to the City of Nashville and placed on display in Centennial Park in 1953. After nearly 66 years of being exposed to the elements, Nashville Steam relocated No. 576 to the Tennessee Central Railway Museum in March 2019 for a complete mechanical rebuild for special events and excursion service. The restoration is estimated to cost approximately $2.5 million and take 3 to 4 years to complete. The restoration of NC&StL No. 576 is made possible through collaborative partnerships with Nashville Metro Parks and our friends at TCRM."
