1958 Vauxhall Velox

This was arguably the closest that a British car got to the rear fins that were de rigueur in America at the time and the rest has a strong American influence. (Brian Snelson/Wikimedia)

The Seaboard Air Line Railroad (SAL) station in Miami, Florida, circa 1940

This was located at 2210 NW 7th Avenue in Allapattah, Florida, two miles north of downtown Miami. The first SAL train arrived in Miami on January 8, 1927 and this station building was built in 1930.

In 1971, Amtrak took over passenger services and moved them to a new station near the SAL's Hialeah Yards opened in 1978.

Vesteraalens Dampskibsselskab poster, Norway, early 20th century

It looks like traditional costumes the people are wearing.

"This was a Norwegian shipping company that operated ferries in Northern Norway. The ferry service was founded by Richard With on 10 November 1881 at Stokmarknes in Nordland, Norway. In the same year, the shipping company's first ship - the steamer DS Vesteraalen from 1865 (ex-SS Arendal) was purchased from Arendals Dampskibsselskab. The company ran in the local transportation route, and then it started the first Coastal Express in 1893 with the ship Vesteraalen from 1891. The company merged in 1987 with Ofotens Dampskibsselskab and a new company was formed, Ofotens og Vesteraalens Dampskibsselskab (OVDS). That company merged with Troms Fylkes Dampskibsselskap in 2006 to form Hurtigruten Group." (Wikipedia)

The Fell locomotive, not the one you think

A British film from 1951 in the diesel era designed by a man named Fell.

According to Wikipedia, "British Railways 10100 was an unusual experimental diesel locomotive known informally as The Fell Diesel Locomotive (after Lt. Col. L. F. R. Fell, who was one of the designers). It was the joint production of Davey Paxman & Co, Shell Refining & Marketing Co and Lt-Col L. F. R. Fell, built for them by the London, Midland and Scottish Railway at Derby. Sir Harry Ricardo was also involved. By the time it emerged in 1950, nationalisation had taken place and it carried British Railways livery. The locomotive had six diesel engines, four of them used for traction. There were two auxiliary engines, both of which were 150 hp (110 kW) AEC 6-cylinder units, and these drove the superchargers for the main engines and the purpose of this arrangement was to enable the main engines to deliver very high torque at low crankshaft speed."

Dutch 'Blue Angel' art

The "Blauwe Engel" was a series of Dutch diesel-electric trainsets that was used by the NS from 1953 to 1998. The name was derived from the bright blue color that these trainsets initially had. A connection with the famous feature film Der blaue Engel from 1930 has often been suggested, but never established. When new colors for diesel trains were introduced around 1960, the nickname became "Red Devils".  As the livery in this artwork is the latter, it should be called "Rode Duivel"?  Info

The Rein Pol artpiece is available as a print here.

The model was first exhibited at the 1937 Commercial Motor Show and withdrawn in 1945. Was the reason for the two axles concern over front-end weight? You wonder if they were fitted with power steering.

SAR 620 class 4-6-2 in the main street

A scene in Semaphore Road, Semaphore. South Australia, 1978, with an excursion train.

The old railway line between Port Adelaide and Semaphore in Adelaide’s northwest ran along Semaphore Road for part of its journey. Along with Ellen Street in Port Pirie (SA), Denison Street in Rockhampton (Qld) and Calder Highway in Wycheproof (Vic) and a few others, this was not a common sight in Australia, unlike Asia and North America.

The SA Railways 620 Class were 4-6-2 type. Fred Shea, Chief Mechanical Engineer of the SAR designed a 140-long-ton Pacific type. A total of 10 were produced at the Islington shops over 1936-38.

Class leader (#620) has the distinction of being the first streamlined locomotive built in Australia, beating the Victorian S Class conversions by about a year. (Pic via. State Library of South Australia)

This was a short-lived such ferry, although not as short as the Wahine for which this was built as the replacement.

Rangatira was built in Tyneside, England in 1972 but was withdrawn after the Union Steam Ship Company decided to end the overnight Wellington-Lyttelton service (for Christchurch) in 1976 and this ship went to the Clyde River in Glasgow before being on-sold. (pic via Paul Strathdee in 1977)
