the Golden Gate Bridge

One of the two most famous bridges in America (the other being the Brooklyn Bridge in New York) the 1.7 mile (2.7 km) Golden Gate suspension bridge has since 27 May 1937 connected San Francisco on the northern tip of the San Francisco peninsula to Marin County on the mainland.  It is 90 feet (27 metres) wide, 746 feet high and has a clearance above the water of 227 feet.  It has 6 lanes over which 118,000 vehicles travel daily, as well as cyclists and pedestrians.  The above artwork was part of a series for California tourism from the early 1950s.
