Garratt steam locomotive on the North Island Main Trunk


We showed a photo of one of these 4-6-2+2-6-4 locomotives at Paekakariki a few weeks ago; here is a scene stated to be near Taumarunui.

Incidentially on page 43 of the recent book Trains on the Trunk, Rob Merrifield(?) states that the Garratts were scrapped after less than eight years. Oh dear.  The three Garratts were actually reconstructed into six Pacific type G class locomotives in 1937 and used for another two decades (although that didn't prevent continuing problems).
