26 January 1788 is marked as the beginning of Australia (Captain Cook had named the whole continent New South Wales and claimed it for Britain, the other states were created later), so here are the two themes of transport and convicts - a former Queensland Railways prisoner carriage.
Of course there's more to Australia than that, so staying with transport in Queensland, here is a cute little diesel tractor hauling a load of sugar cane to the Nambour mill some years ago, and a more recent electrically hauled coal train; both commodities are a major part of the Oz economy.
