scrapping of Fiordland tunnel project now puts focus on monorail project proposal

On Wednesday, NZ Conservation Minister scuttled the proposal for an 11 km road tunnel to shorten the distance between Queenstown and Milford Sound (see earlier post).

The alternative is for a three stage transport experience involving a catamaran on the lake, a 43 km monorail and an all-terrain vehicle. website

In principle we like the idea of an electric monorail, provided destruction of pristine native bush can be kept to a minimum and according to the promoters of this project it can be.

Another choice is an aerial gondola style cableway like that which operates between Cairns and Kuranda in north Queensland.  With this tourists can travel there one way by either the ordinary train or  the cableway and and back by the alternative.
