the Cape Palliser

In New Zealand of course, Cape Palliser is the southernmost point of the North Island, but in the UK it was the name of a trawler which during WW2 was requisitioned for use as a warship by the Royal Navy.  She was built by Cochrane & Sons Shipbuilders of Selby and launched in September 1936. Displacement was 497 tons. She was commissioned as HMS Cape Palliser (FY 256) in November 1939, fitted with a 4" gun.  Four months after the end of WW2 she was returned to her owner in September 1945 and finally scrapped at Dunston in 1963.  This painting of the peacetime role is by artist Reg Moss.

For details of fishing vessels that served as warships in the New Zealand Navy during WW2, see the book Nets Lines and Pots, Volume One.
