Of course the 1940 Tour de France wasn't held as the Germans had invaded France the month before. The Germans were keen for the Tour to be held as normal during the war, but members of the organising newspaper
L'Auto were uncooperative and other cycle races were held instead.

In 1942 the 'La France Socialiste' organised a replacement for the Tour De France, called the 'Circuit de France, which ran from 28 September to 4 October. Comprising six stages totalling 1,650 kilometres (1,030 mi), it went from Paris to Paris via Le Mans, Poitiers, Limoges, Clermont-Ferrand, St-Étienne, Lyon and Dijon. 69 riders entered the race, with 27 finishing. The event was won by Belgian cyclist François Neuville. ahead of Frenchmen Louis Thietard and Louis Caput. The event was not held again.
