Piccadilly Circus, London, 1950s
One of the best known locations in London is the road junction of Piccadilly Circus (in the meaning of a circular formation), seen in this late 1950s postcard with the then ubiquitous red RT double decker buses, black London taxis and a few ordinary cars of the period. The walls of illuminated signs in this view have since been reconsidered as visual pollution and now only the building on the left carries them. Also plain in this view is the Shaftesbury Monument Memorial Fountain, topped by the statue of Eros, the Greek god of love.
