While electric cars are the future, there are practical limitations with them at present. Most on the market look like oversize versions of the carts that dear old mum trundles up to the supermarket on--and their range and speed is not great. Electric cars which a lawyer or bank executive would want to be seen in aren't cheap: above is a picture of the Karma, designed and produced by ex-Ford designer Henrik Fisker in California. The specifications are impressive but the catch is that both the plug-in hybrid (mixed petrol and battery) and pure electric cars sell at $80,000. Like other e-cars it must be charged on electricity from the mains and the energy, in this case, stored in lithium-ion batteries. Fisker's partner organisation, Quantum Technologies developed the technology in 2004 for the U.S. military who wanted a vehicle that moves quietly and does not radiate heat. Website
