Waikanae River rail and road bridges - 1938
The illustration from the New Zealand Railways Magazine in 1938 shows the railway and road bridges over the Waikanae River at that time. The road bridge was replaced in the 1960s, but the rail bridge is still the same. The Waikanae station, endpoint of the current electrification project, is around the next bend ahead of the locomotive.
The electric catenary masts have been put on the the bridge side with special mountings, but the bridge remains single track. Those who have the book New Zealand 1950s Steam in Colour have a photo of the hill on which this photographer was standing.
