a tram to Karori at Paekakariki
Well, at about 50 km from Karori it's obviously a museum, the Wellington Tramway Museum at Queen Elizabeth Park, MacKay's Crossing entrance, north of Paekakariki which has an operating electric tramway from there down to the beach, about 2 km - something to stop at and appreciate on the way along State Highway One, particularly on weekends. This park was used as a base for US Marines during WW2, and some displays relate to that.
The tram shown was built in 1925 and is known as a double saloon type. Trams operated to Karori Park until 1954 when they were replaced by trolley buses. The museum's website.
See our books Wellington: a Capital Century and Wellington Transport Memories for lots more information and pictures of the city's trams.
