old British £1 coin ceases to be legal tender this Sunday

The new 12-sided coin, shown, which apparently has been appearing since March, completely replaces the old round coin on 15 October and the old ones won't be legal any more.

"Experts say it will be the most secure in the world and will help to tackle the problem of counterfeits."  Considering the amount of effort required to counterfeit an old one and its value (about $US 1.30) you wonder why people would bother.

Some of the old ones featuring specific limited designs, are worth more than their face value, though.
