the German E18 class electrics

This was a standard gauge 1-Do-1 type manufactured both during the 1930s (53) and over 1954-1955 (2) for Germany's 15 kV 16 2/3 Hz overhead catenary lines.

In 1939 at the Universal Exposition in Paris a Gold Medal was awarded to the E18 on account of its power (3,040 kW or 4,080 hp at the one hour rating and 2,840 kW or 3,810 hp continuous rating), top speed of 150 km/h or 93 mph and elegant design. 

The length was 16.92 metres and weight 109 tonnes.

During WW2 six units were lost to air attacks and two to accidents. Towards the end of the war 7 units used in Silesia were moved to Bavaria while 5 that remained in east were seized by the Soviets, eventually returned in 1952.  Late in the 1950s, the east rebuilt 3 units from salvaged parts.

Final withdrawal in the west took place in 1984.
