But despite the usualness of this, building insurance premiums for Wellington have taken a hike since the events in Christchurch over 2010-2011 and some cases, particularly for old unreinforced masonry buildings, are causing hardship. Some 470 buildings have been rated yellow, meaning they don't meet the earthquake code and must be strengthened.
